Choi Jae-rim Faces Another Backlash Over “Overlapping Roles”? Condition Worsens, Leading to Performance Cancellation

On December 20, the production companies of the musical Cyrano, RG Company and CJ ENM, announced via their official social media accounts, “Due to health reasons, Choi Jae-rim, who plays Cyrano, will not be able to perform in today’s 2:30 PM (KST) show.”

They continued, “We sincerely apologize to the audience who purchased tickets and came to see the show for the inconvenience caused by this sudden cancellation.” They also informed that ticket payments would be refunded at 110% of the original price.

The companies further expressed, “We wish for Choi Jae-rim’s speedy recovery and once again apologize for the sudden cancellation. We kindly ask for your understanding.”

Earlier that day, Choi Jae-rim appeared in the 2:30 PM performance but reportedly showed signs of discomfort from the first act. Observers noted struggles with high notes and even difficulty delivering regular lines, as his voice cracked frequently. Ultimately, the production team decided to cancel the performance before the start of the second act to protect the actor.

The musical Cyrano, co-produced by RG Company and CJ ENM, premiered on October 6. The production is adapted from a play by French poet and playwright Edmond Rostand, inspired by a real-life figure. The story centers on Cyrano, a heroic leader of the Gascon Cadets during 17th-century France amid the Spanish war.

Choi Jae-rim plays the titular role of Cyrano, but concerns had been raised even before the premiere. These concerns stemmed from his heavy workload, as he had been appearing in multiple productions consecutively.

Back in January, Choi Jae-rim tested positive for COVID-19, which led to casting changes for his performances in Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera. At the time, his health decline was attributed to overcommitment to overlapping roles. Despite this past experience, Choi Jae-rim is currently juggling roles in the musicals Chicago, Kinky Boots (provincial performances), and Cyrano.
